Germany: Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Honored At SPD Convention In Berlin

June 28, 2025, Berlin, Berlin, Germany: Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz received a standing ovation Saturday, June 28, 2025, as the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) honored his leadership during a pivotal farewell appearance at the partyâ€s federal convention in Berlin. Scholz, who led Germany from 2021 to 2025, addressed hundreds of party delegates on the second day of the SPD congress, reflecting on what he called a "great time" in office and offering support for the partyâ€s efforts to regroup following a historic electoral defeat earlier this year. Former Cabinet ministers Hubertus Heil, Karl Lauterbach, Svenja Schulze, and Nancy Faeser joined Scholz on stage during the tribute. SPD co-chair Lars Klingbeil praised Scholz for steering Germany through difficult times. Newly elected party co-leader and Labor Minister Baerbel Bas also thanked the outgoing ministers and emphasized the importance of continuity in advocating for workers†rights. Bas replaced longtime party chair Saskia Esken.
