Mexican Wolves Increase Numbers With Help.

March 9, 2026, Seattle, Washington, USA: Mexican Wolves (Canis lupus baileyi) at the Woodland Park Zoo warm themselves in the sun on a brisk day. Mexican Wolves are a subspecies of Gray Wolf (Canis lupus), and in New Mexico and Arizona, their numbers have increased in the last two years from 286 to 319. A comprehensive captive breeding program brought the Mexican Wolf back from the brink of extinction in the 1980s.
