The National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City has a history of cultural awareness, pride, and unity that began in 1958. The parade was organized by notable Puerto Rican people in Spanish Harlem to honor their heritage and replaced the Hispanic Day Parade. The parade's mission, leer más which was supported by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York, represented a shift away from ''Yankeefication'' and towards culturally specific expressions based on traditional fiestas patronales. Now in its 67th year, the parade has grown in size and popularity over the years, and is now one of the largest parades in the United States. It takes place annually on the second Sunday of June, starting at Fifth Avenue and 44th Street and proceeding north to 79th Street. The parade honors the 3.5 million people of Puerto Rico and the 5 million people of Puerto Rican descent living in the United States. In 2007, the parade had over 4 million participants.
