Southern Lebanon: Rmeish Largely Spared, Aita al-Shaab in Ruins

11 November 2025, Lebanon, Rmiesh: Students wave from their bus as they are driven home after school in the southern Lebanese Christian village of Rmiesh. Unlike the neighbouring village of Aita al-Shaab, which lies in ruins, most inhabitants of Rmeish - situated directly adjacent to it - never fled their homes and the village emerged almost unscathed from the war between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. Meanwhile, some 250 residents of Aita al-Shaab have now returned from a pre-war population of 15,000, to live amid houses destroyed in the fighting. Photo: Marwan Naamani/dpa
