Iraqi carpenter perseveres after losing legs in U.S. war

30 April 2025, Iraq, Baghdad: Younis Al-Shahmani, an Iraqi carpenter, who lost both legs in the U.S. war on Iraq, continues his daily work. Al-Shahmani, born 1977, married with six children, lives in Baghdad. A carpenter since the late 1980s, he was gravely injured by a U.S. cluster missile attack in 2003, during America's aggressive war on Iraq, resulting in the amputation of both legs. The trauma inflicted severe psychological distress, yet he resumed work. Younis seeks compensation for the war's devastating impact on victims. Photo: Ameer Al Mohammedawi/dpa
