Monastic site discovered in Egypt

HANDOUT - 13 March 2021, Egypt, Bahariya Oasis: Coptic inscriptions is seen written on one of the walls at a monastic site that has been discovered in Tel Ganub Qasr Al-'Aguz, located some 370 km southwest of capital Cairo in the Bahariya Oasis. Victor Ghica, head of the Norwegian-French archaeological mission, said that the site, where the remains of three churches have been discovered, could be the oldest archaeologically attested monastic site in the world. Spanning from the first half of the fourth century to the seventh century, the site comprises several sectors built mainly of basalt, mud bricks, while some buildings were directly dug into the geological substratum.
